0201. Barry Adamson
Oedipus Schmoedipus
This is an album I ought to love even before the first listen, since Barry's Curiculum Vitae among a whole bunch of other stuff includes playing in Magazine, The Birthday Party and The Bad Seeds (though he quit ten years beforeMurder Ballads).
He mixes styles a lot. From what sounds like free-form jamming in Dirty Barry to claustrophobic soundscapes almost reminiscent of Throbbing Gristle in It's Business As Usual, to almost easy-listening cocktail-jazz in Miles. And just for good measure he throws in a little bedtime story in Vermillion Kisses.
Maybe not surprising it's the darker tracks I like, with The Sweetest Embrace as the prime cut. Might also be due to that this track also involves former band-mate Nick Cave's distinct bariton graces the melodies.
Even though I didn't succumb to this album as I probably should have it's still very filmic and quite cool.
