0994. Dion
Born To Be With You
Okay, after Gainsbourg's Histoire De Melody Nelson and the back story of The Girl From Ipanema I think it's a bit creepy when a grown-ass man sings that he's "born to be with" a "little girl". I know it's just a figure of speech, but still: Edge Of The World by Faith No More comes to mind…
Dion seems like a nice guy, though. Maybe a bit desperate, cause in the next song he prays to god to, as the title says, Make The Woman Love Me. But still.
Produced by Phil Spector after the crazy had
begun to seep through, this album was shelved by a disgruntled
Phil for half a year and disavowed by Dion for sounding like a
funeral.
And, well, they're both right in a way: Spector's produced better
stuff, and it does sound a bit sombre.
But! The version of (He's Got) The Whole World In His Hand is at least highly original: a such thorough revamping that almost the only thing reminiscent of the original is the lyrics. It's phase shifted and melodically screwed (albeit not chopped) and just interesting from a song construction viewpoint.
But as an album? Not so very interesting
