I'll just come on out and say it right now: I think it's pretty obvious that Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis) comes into his own when not with the Pixies.

The single Headache for instance, is like taking a step back from Surfer Rosa into even more catchy and absurd tunes.

Fiddle Riddle on the other hand is a very good example of how you can make meta-music without falling into the The Magnetic Fields hole - there are no snide, elitist remarks about the genre being simple, primitive or such, just self-concious and ditto referential pseudo-reggae.

Weird and a tiny bit delightful, Teenager Of The Year is a good example of what happens when a dude doesn't need to brandish his ego all the time.
