0800. Ice Cube
The Predator
Nowadays most rappers would have a pseudo-topical "mixtape" out on the web before the riots had subsided, but back in '92 it actually took a couple of months after the Rodney King riots before the music hit the streets.
On his third release, The Predator, Ice Cube's talking about racism, gangsta stuff, and, unfortunately, again the standard misogynic rants, most prominent in Don't Trust 'Em (sadly also sampling Public Enemy's Don't Believe The Hype).
In other words, this is a repeater of his solo debut.
On a sidenote, the misuse of some of the samples counteracts their purpose. Say Hi To The Bad Guy is so heavily interspersed with the intro of Parliament's P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up) that I can't really listen to it - I'm just waiting for Clinton and the band to cut loose and save me from this.
There are some memorables, though.
Firstly, there's It Was A Good Day, the "day in the life of"-track
that's spawned its own investigative branch, where people are trying
to pinpoint the exact date. With a bunch of quotables it was an instant
classic. Also, there's Check Yo Self where Cube, together with diggedy-Das
effedi-EFX, hits it home.
Finally(?) there's also We Had To Tear This Mothafucka Up, the vitriolic
attack on the LAPD.
