0769. Todd Rundgren
A Wizard, A True Star
"My voice goes so high You would think I was gay / But I play my guitar In such a man-cock way" - the lines are from Is It My Name? and just makes me go "What the …?"
Todd has since attributed bad lyrics from the period to his newfound and affluent use of drugs at the time, and it could also explain why he chose to make a 56 minute single disc album [fact check: also apparently the oil chrisis going on at the time led to a shortage of vinyl, sinking his dreams of another double-album], going beyond the usual scope of circa 45 minutes and thus lowering the quality of the recording a bit (not that it matters for most of us with regular hearing as he's a skilled producer/sound engineer too).
The drug use most definitely explains why there's nineteen tracks on A Wizard, A True Star, and only seven of them are over two minutes long. It's simply put a medley album with a mixture of rock and progressive with a dash of "throw every effect we've got in the studio" here and there.
