0701. Leftfield
Leftism
After dodging their label for a while by only releasing remixes instead of own material, the duo Leftfield were finally free of that contract and could release their debut. Giving Portishead some competition for the title of best album of the year.
Well, to be honest, Leftism, although a good album, doesn't carry
much weight compared to Dummy, so the latter's
win was not much of a surprise.
But while there is some house on this, it's at least what's called
"progressive house", so not a house clap in earshot. And with guest
vocals from Johnny Rotten (sorry John Lydon) on Open Up
it's a treat (he does it far better work than on any of the PIL
albums).
But mostly it's the dub / techno combinations that makes it an album
for me (also: there's a Swedish connection on the album as Papa Dee
can be heard on Release The Pressure).
Unfortunately 21st Century Poem isn't a good last track (okay,
second-to-last, as there is an untitled bonus boom "hidden" at the
end) as it's just too clichéd.
