0697. Alice In Chains
Dirt
Once again it's the chore of trying to explain to others the
why's and how's of an album that's pretty much ingrained in
the eardrums. Sometimes it feels like attempting to describe
what yellow sounds like.
But here goes.
From the very first word to the last I'm hooked (and also just realized that the album starts with "I" and ends with "you" - mind. blown.), cause tracks like Them Bones, Rooster, Dirt and Would? are probably some of the best songs out there. It's gravel, angst, fear and addiction and it's just fantastic.
Rooster, about guitarrist Jerry Cantrell's dad's service in the Vietnam War is just chilling, and Would?, dedicated to the late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood (which by the way makes me hope for Temple Of A Dog to appear on the list).
The irony of Junkhead can't be avoided, as Staley professes his love for the heroin that killed him with arguments that boil down to don't knock it till you've tried it (he later recanted, stating he didn't want the fans to get the idea that heroin was the shit to do).
The thing about this album is that everything just fits. The rumbling bass and drums of doom, the metal guitar and the (sort of) nasal vocals. And I can't wait till the album draws to an end, bringing on Would?, to be able to repeat this GotToGet all over again.
