0594. The Beach Boys
Today!
One thing that's for certain is that The Beach Boys were down with the kids. Earlier on, I've been mentioning how time-bound some songs from the sixties are by their vocabulary, but they've got nothing on the Boys and their When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) where we can hear mentions of both "groovy" and "square" in the ponderings of an adolescent (by the lyrics I'd guess the protagonist's around seven years old or so, but I suppose he's actually a teen).
With only one song over the three minute mark (Help Me, Rhonda), it's a string of surf pop-pearls (at least the uptempo tracks) and it's almost dangerously infectious. Dance, Dance, Dance especially, as it makes me want to put on a pair of swim-trunks and have a dance-off on the beach.
At times it becomes kinda wierd though. The lead of In The Back Of My Mind seems to sway significantly and well, the attitudes towards relationships are relics from the baby-boomer generation.
By the way: just like yesterday's album they've got a recording of the band hanging out, but unlike Slipknot they sound like a bunch I wouldn't mind hanging with.
