I got to say that the expectations on this album were very high. At the same time I know better than to expect the same level of emotional involvement I got from Ingénue, so when it's not I don't get so very disappointed. Cause it's recognizeable from the later album, even if it's clear that these songs aren't as personal to k.d. as the ones on Ingénue.
This is her first solo album withour backup-band The Reclines, and it's a pleasant album. A bit average, but nevertheless pleasant.
Paying back some to her predecessors, k.d. joins
forces with "Little miss Dynamite" Brenda Lee, "the coal
miner's daughter" Loretta Lynn and Kitty Wells (of It
Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels-fame) for
the final track. A medley that too, unfortunately,
doesn't meet the expectations.
But still: a pleasant album.
