0549. Destiny's Child
Survivor
Looking up some background facts I realize I didn't
remember that Destiny's Child used to be a quartet.
This is the album where the quartet had split, gained
two new members, lost them, gained one, and replaced her.
I.e. the "after the turmoil, but we're stronger than EVAR
now". Thus the title, and thus the multi million selling
single claiming "I'm not gonna diss you on the Internet,
cause my momma taught me better than that" - showing that
"what I'm gonna do is write an album dissing you,
release a couple of singles getting played around the
world, cause mom never said anything negative 'bout that"
It's danceable, and the trio wails their hearts out, but
one thing that creep my out though is that the group's
named after Bouncy's mom and the album's got a song
called Sexy Daddy - a bit too much keeping it in the
family for my taste. Also, borrowing from Baltimora's
Tarzan Boy in Nasty Girl is just kind of wierd (and the
Push It influenced parts are also out of place, although
I get why they're there).
The Gospel Medley feels just like when Yngwie Malmsteen plays or when Peter Criss gets his five minute drum solo on Alive - just a display of technique (in Criss' case maybe the lack thereof).
But on the other hand it's the hit factory called Destiny's Child making anthemic pseudo-girlpower r&b mixed with ballads (though I'd really wish they'd read up more on talking to abuse victims, cause The Story Of Beauty is full of good intent, but I don't really think the problem is not feeling beautiful).
Still, I like the beat in Independent Women Part II, it's a nice change from the rest of the album's more radio-styled tracks.
