0548. Girls Against Boys
Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby
On the slightly dirtier side of grunge, a.k.a. post-hardcore, comes Girls Against Boys. Originally founded with the drummer from Fugazi, but at the moment of this release he'd dropped out and been replaced by a trio of other musicians to bring us the sound of double-bass (no, not as in the big string quartet instrument, but as in two guys with one bass guitar each) and fuzzed-out grinding.
The first half minute of vocals seem to quickly go from "aww,
damn, the music sounded great and then the singer came in
and ruined it" to "shit, this is pretty damn great, the
singer knows what he's doing".
It's noisy, it's angst and sarcasm and I like it. And it
grows on me for every repeat.
[But why the Hell does 1001 Albums... list it as being from 1994? It's a year later than every other source (including the album sleeve notes) say it was released. Again with the bad research, I guess.]
