0547. Malcolm McLaren
Duck Rock
This is a crash course in how borrowing and stealing
can make a kind of cool album as Malcolm McLaren goes
out to forage in hip hop as well as South African music.
McLaren's of course the guy who discovered the Sex Pistols
and in this he's created somewhat of a producer's album:
it's a semi-eclectic mix of stuff he likes, not always
with a common ground (but saved by Trevor Horn's editing).
As for the singular songs, Buffalo Gals is a staple in modern music. Referenced in (among others) Eminem's Without Me, but maybe more famously sampled by both Public Enemy and Skee-Lo it was one of the first crossover hiphop hits. Double Dutch on the other hand features a Mbaqanga rhythm, which McLaren later on got sued for as the Boyoyo Boys thought it sounded a bit too much like one of their songs.
Along with a bunch of people and groups going uncredited on the album, it perhaps shows a bit more of McLaren's attitude towards musicians than he'd like to.
