0528. Ástor Piazzolla & Gary Burton
The New Tango
So, this is the release for the english speaking market of a live album showcasing the nuevo tango that Piazzolla had made famous (don't worry, the only thing that seem to differ from the spanish is the title and liner notes).
Bringing in a distinct jazz-feel to his Argentinian tango
it's a step away from the traditional and into what possibly
could be called artful music. The compositions are from
Ástor's entire carreer and along for the concert
is vibraphonist Gary Burton (who got a composition,
Vibraphonissimo, made specially for him).
And they play it tight. So tight I'm a bit amazed that
Burton only rehearsed three times with the quintet before
the concert.
This is very nice indeed and it's worth at number of spins on the turntables.
