0506. Giant Sand
Chore Of Enchantment
The introductory Overture sounds like something produced by the RZA, but the rest of the album's more in the vein of the Eels. Although with more emphasis on the rock part of their alternative rock-label than the alternative.
Singer and bandleader Howe Gelb has listened a lot to the likes of Leonard Cohen (who, by the way, gets name-checked in Satellite) and thusly at times tries to model his voice after Lenny. It's okay music. It doesn't get my spine tingling, but it's good.
Just to make this a bit more of a namedribbler I got to mention
that a couple of the guys in Giant Sand splintered off after a
couple of years to devote themselves to Calexico
- a band that's like Giant Sand squared.
So - kind of thumbs up for this one, than.
