0491. Motörhead
Ace Of Spades
To start the album with one of the most recognizeable songs in rock'n'roll is
pretty cocky, but I guess attitude isn't anything that Motörhead's ever had
a lack of.
The problem of course is that an opening like Ace Of Spades is a tough act to
follow and, yes, for the rest of the album the average listener probably
just tries to catch their breath. But for the ones who got a bit more stamina
there's a whole lot more hard rock (or heavy metal) to get caught up in (or,
in the case of Motörhead drummer Philty, break your neck to (not to worry, he
survived)).
While none of the rest quite reach to the title track's feeling of being stuck in the engine of a hog-type motorcycle, an honorable mention goes to their dedication to the roadies ((We Are) The Road Crew) and the dirty old man appearing in Jailbait, though.
There's a reason they still play Ace Of Spades on their shows, some thirty years later, and it's not just to get enough cash for the ride home.
