0489. The Kinks
Arthur Or the Decline And Fall of the British Empire
A year after the Village Green Preservation Society The Kinks released the follow-up - which tured out to be another step on the path to irrelevance.
Arthur… carries on along the lines of Village Green… and Face To Face in that it focuses more on concept than the snazziness of the music (yes, I admit it: I want pop to have some sort of hit-sound to it). This time the concept was the soundtrack to a TV-series that never got past the inception stage, so I guess the songs are supposed to reflect the story or mood of the episodes.
And, okay, I think I know what they were doing: they were just aiming to be the Flaming Lips of their day. I can see the potential, but due to lack of technology (or methodology?) The Kinks just falls short every time. It's sad, really (and I refuse to allude the name of this album to the history of the band in some sort of pun).
