0473. The Cure
Disintegration
Seriously, kids, I never thought I'd feel this grateful for hearing The Cure! After yesterdays dissappointment it's a bit of a relief to hear the emo-before-there-was-such-a-word-as-emo-and-way-before-it-was-a- derogatory-term distress calls of Robert Smith and companions (also: this is music from people who've actually been on dates).
Not many bands accomplish making their eighth album a good one. So kudos to that. But another path this album trodded is well worn: animosity between members leading to the rejection and ejection of a founder (also: claiming the disposed member didn't do anything on the album).
While some of the instrumental passages seem uninspired, a whole lot more (like the first half of Fascination Street) are exactly what they are supposed to be: music that easily stands alone, evoking an emotion. The only thing i dislike is the high level of echo on the song in Plainsong, but that's a minor detail.
This, though, makes me long for the Cocteau Twins.
