Larks' Tongues In Aspic
Lo and behold! Another prog album from the beginning of the seventies!
After a three minute plinkety-plonk mbira intro, Larks' Tongues In Aspic,
Part One cuts loose with an almost heavy metal rhythm.
The second track, Book Of Saturday, is surprisingly short (just under three
minutes, while the other five are all beyond the seven minute mark) and also
surprisingly pleasant. Like the the rest of the album it's intricate rhythmic
/ melodic patterns and well, prog-ish lyrics (where not instrumental).
The very metal feel creeps back in part two of the title track (which also ends the album), and makes it a pretty cool number (apparently they and their fans liked it too, as it became one of the standards on the setlist).
All in all, I got to say that this is by far a better album that I expected. Even though I know it it bears repeating: not all prog is like Tarkus or Selling England By The Pund.
