0461. Bebel Gilberto
Tanto Tempo
This has been another white whale for me. The Random Page Generator picked
Tanto Tempo out about half a year or so ago, but I've not found a copy until
just about today.
Anyway, Bebel's the daughter of bossa nova greats Miúcha and João Gilberto
(whom I'm sure will pop up on the list at least once) and with a lineage
like that it's not surprising she went into the family buisiness.
Bebel takes us along for some traditional bossa but also shows us she's not
afraid to experiment a bit, bringing in electronic artist Amon Tobin for a
track, and having the DJ Suba producing the whole album.
So it's a very modern sounding bossa nova, at times crossing over into dumb
pop (well, it's possibly only the last track, Close Your Eyes, with its house-
influences) but mostly a smooth ride all the way.
I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a Jazz Samba for Y2K, but I'll venture out on the branch far enough to say it's better than Caetano Veloso (with whom Bebel's collaborated at times).
