0439. Dead Kennedys
Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Yes, I'm very well aware that I'm about to celebrate a vibrato being used just about every second of the album, even though I (sort of) dissed Fergal Sharkey a bit.
The Dead Kennedys, for those of you don't in the know, were a hardcore punk act from San Fransisco whose DK-logo nowadays can be seen on just about everything, but backinnaday they at times had to go under pseudonymous bandnames just to get on stage (for some reason Americans take offence at a band seemingly named as a snide remark to their murdered favorite presidential peeps).
While most tracks are full on satire and politics set to a ravaging punk noise, the echo laden intro of Holiday In Cambodia still stands out (as does, of course, its lyrics - don't get me wrong here, Let's Lynch The Landlord and the fifties' sounding Kill The Poor and many others are damn good all-rounders, but Holiday... stands out in all aspects). And even though the cover of Viva Las Vegas is a bit gimmicky, it's still a well executed track and, put into the context of the rest of the album, a very nice end.
