First Issue
Expectations dropped as the random page generator picked this one out. As you might remember, PIL:s Metal Box didn't hit home here (in fact it's one of relatively few I recommend you to avoid), so a step in any direction could only be an improvement.
And actually they've taken a step.
But since Metal Box was released after this one it's a step back. Not a huge one,
though, cause they still think it's a god idea to take what would have been
a sort of bad two-minute track and repeat it ad nauseum (prime example is the almost
eight minute long Fodderstomp where they sing like a typical Monthy Python-crone over
a pseudo-disco drum) as well as using the rhetoric of a fourteen year old who'd had
an epiphany (as in Religion I where it's on the level of "whoa dude, it's like, you
know, 'god' is 'dog' spelled backwards!"). Also, for some reason I can't
help but hear "Ebeneezer" instead of "Annalisa" in the song with the same name.
The one track they actually make something listenable is Public Image where the
band come together to create music and lyrics that works just fine.
[And once again, 1001 Albums You Must Hear... has missed to check facts: they name this album Public Image, even though it's pretty clear from the cover that it's called First Issue. Proof-reading isn't that hard, guys]
