0428. Neneh Cherry
Raw Like Sushi
Okay, so how many Swedish rappers do you know about? Now: how many of them have had
carreers since the eighties? How many of them have had international carreers?
By now you ought to have narrowed it down to the creator of today's entry.
Cause while Neneh Cherry mostly had grown up in England, she was born in Sweden and
she lives here now, so yeah - she's ours.
Back to the album then, shall we? So the the flow and beats sound old, but not bad, it's simply a time-stamp of quality.
The lyrics deal with being a woman (and quite a lot of empowerment), why she dropped out of school at 14 (to hang out with The Slits among other things, parenthood (she was eight months pregnant at the time she played Top Of The Pops with Buffalo Stance, a couple of months before the album dropped), and some beefing with an unnamed chick who tries to steal her man (also, it's the bad track on the album). She also sings (and does a good job at that too), so in all, not your typical hiphop album. Take into the equation that it features appearences by the majority of Massive Attack and there's yet another reason why it should be on a one thousand list.
