0410. Rufus Wainwright
Want One
Ever since I saw a TV special with Rufus, all I picture when I hear his voice is
Eddie Izzard's Dressed To Kill-show. Something in the way they both were stumbeling
around kind of drunkenly.
But my silly associations aside, Want One is a good album. As the child of folk
musicians, I guess it was hard for Wainwright to go any other way than into music,
but he at least has picked his own path.
The polyphonic spree of Oh What A World is a good introduction to the rest of the songs as he sings in a world-weary voice, but still seems to find things to wonder at. The other songs are also big, flamboyant, (and good) productions and as Want One is the first half of an intended double album that (for reasons I don't know) got split up in two releases, I'm guessing Want Two will show up on the list also.
