0407. Tricky

That tricky kid's first solo album's just great. Overdubbing layers 'pon layers and re-using things from fellow trip-hoppers (among others a sample Portishead used the year before shows up as the base of Hell Is Round The Corner and his version of the song Massive Attack recorded at the same time under the name Carmacoma is here called Overcome), Tricky creates a different mindscape where it feels as if randomness is the norm (Schrödingers cat would be completely lost (and, of course, completely sure of its location)).
The peeve, though, is that the track listing is all wrong. Example: putting Ponderosa just before Black Steel takes the wind out of the former as it's sandwiched between the albums two major tracks and Ponderosa's also got a whole other vibe to it).
It'd be much better if Ponderosa' been paired with Brand New You're Retro and Black Steel
(a cover of Public Enemy's Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos)
had been the start of the second half of the album (or the closer).
But anyway, whether it's a cover, version or any of his own tracks it's wierd and
wholly Tricky.
