0348. The Undertones
Hypnotised
The Undertones were an Northern Irish sort-of-punk band whose rise to fame was started when Radio 1 legend John Peel sponsored the recording of their debut EP Teenage Kicks (and they kept in touch after that).
I can't say that I'm as greatly impressed as Peel was, but this do get my foot tapping. But! Fergal Sharkey (by the way one of the coolest sounding names I know) is yet another singer with the annoying habit of overusing the vibrato (most notably in the cover of Under The Boardwalk), though it works unusually well here.
The best songs are (in chronological order) There Goes Norman, My Perfect Cousin and What's With Terry? I can't really define why, but I guess it's got to do with the narrative, and they make The Undertones' second album an album worth checking out.
