0339. The Band
Music From Big Pink
The debut album from a band called The Band would probably have been called The Album if they were either Peter Gabriel or Scott Walker, but these guys are not that rambunctious.
After backing Bob Dylan on his '66 tour, the band changed their name from The Hawks to The Band and recorded an album with soulful, and sometimes a bit psychedelic, folk-rock that's become a favorite of music journalists and musicians alike, while maybe not as big with the general populous.
While The Weight is rightfully the grand moment of the album I got to say I like the cover of Long Black Veil a bit better, it's got all the elements of a good song in its gripping narrative.
This Wheel's On Fire is probably nowadays best known as the intro to Absolutely Fabulous, but was co-written by Dylan and thus also deserves a listen.
