0289. Orbital
Orbital 2
Here's another detail I don't like about the book: very often they mess the titles up. Like this one where they put roman numerals instead of a simple (and correct) 2 or yesterday's album where they put an ampersand instead of "and". I know it's just minor errors, but still: it's the name of the album they say is one of the top per mille of everything released. Just seems like they should be a bit more concearned of getting things right.
Rant's over, now on to Orbital 2.
House music became way more interesting when they started dropping acid and exploring a wider range of electronica and rhythms and on that note the duo Orbital were one of the premier acts (not a house-clap in earshot) even though they lose focus at times (most notably on the house-piano torror of Monday).
Opening with a phase-shifted sample of Lt. Worf they're clearly aiming for space since the first note [fact check: apparently also aiming at enraging their fans, since the sample was used to confuse it with their previous release and the next track's intro was meant to sound like a skip in the grooves if the album]. It's music for your local rave and probably not meant to be listened to when you're clean and sober, but it works.
The sample of Opus III:s [which of course 1001 Albums You Must Hear... writes up as "Opus 3"] It's A Fine Day in Halcyon + On + On catches me off guard, cause backinnaday It's A Fine Day was one of the eeriest tracks I knew - both Kirsty Hawkshaw's appearence and voice were straight out of the uncanny valley.
