0273. The Cardigans
First Band On The Moon
Oh man how I used to hate this proto-hipster band.
My fellow Swedes, the Cardigans started out as a novelty act playing cutesy indie-style cocktail pop and then slowly began the transformation into playing pretentious rock-pop. This is their third album and it falls in exactly in the middle of that development. Also it was their breakthrough everywhere outside of Japan and Sweden, aided by the hits Lovefool and Been It.
One thing that hits me is the abundance of lyrics where the narrator claims she's more or less selling sex.
And no, I don't think the cover of Iron Man is cute, it's just gimmicky. However: after hearing it I can't help but noticing they've "borrowed" a lot of stuff from that song. The outro of Heartbreaker has similarities to the intro of said Iron Man and the last track, Choke, has a main driving figure that's very similar to parts of it too. If I really wanted I'm pretty sue that I'd find a couple of more instances where echoes of Sabbth are heard.
The references (or steals, if you're so inclined) might be a way for the songwriting team Svensson / Svenningsson to try to get some metal back in their lives, since they used to be metal heads before they sold their souls for fame.
Yep. Still don't like these clowns.
