0251. David Bowie
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
Longest title yet?
So, the third time Bowie's on the list and exactly like on Hunky Dory and Young Americans he doesn't sound like he used to, or well, he actually sounds a bit like on Hunky dory, but this time it's better. The band's come together and there's a concept for the album (supposed to be the soundtrack for a musical or TV-show about an alien prophet on a doomed Earth - cheerily enough).
It holds together well enough and has a number of strong songs, but my problem with The Rise And Fall... is that I know the songs won't hold for many listens. Both Starman and Ziggy Stardust are tracks I've grown tired of and I sincerely wish that the same fate won't befall Five Years and others, but I can feel them slipping away for every repeat of the album.
(By the way - doesn't Suffragette City sound an awful lot like Bryan Ferry's Let's Stick Together from a couple of years later?)
