0243. The Flaming Lips
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
And, well, yes, ehm... I don't know what to say more than that this is The Flaming Lips again.
Like The Soft Bulletin it's quirky both lyrically and musically, which shows in the title track, or rather title tracks, where part one is a pop-song (albeit kind of weird) and part two is a collage of beats, screams and sounds.
This is yet another of the albums where a couple of listens just isn't enough to take it all in, but as a preliminary I'm not that fascinated by One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21, as it feels too distant, like they're not aiming the song at me, as if I'm listening in on it rather than listening to it.
There are a couple of more songs with the same vibe, but then again: there's a lot of songs that pulls me in and surrounds me with the craziness that is The Flaming Lips, so it's all in all a nice experience.
By the way: the ending song, Approaching Pavanis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia), was awarded a Grammy for best rock instrumental and even though I don't know the competition I'll say it was well deserved, cause it's a treat
