0211. R.E.M.
Murmur
Murmur is R.E.M:s very first album and as could be expected not all if the pieces that made Document and Green so great had fallen into place yet.
One more unexpected differences is Michael Stipes' voice - he sounds as if he's holding back the vocals instead of letting them burst forth like on later albums.
Also, this doesn't contain any instant loveables (like The One I Love or Orange Crush), but keeps a steady level of alternative rock. Composed by opting out of contemporary trends in an effort to create a sound that would stand the test of time.
But I got to say it's pleasant return after yesterday's bastard. Come to think of it, R.E.M. is the only band this far that's popped up on a (fairly) regular basis - all in the early hundreds (first, hundred-and-nineteenth and this, two-hundred and eleventh place). Exciting to see if they'll return by the time I reach the three-hundreds.
I'm starting to suspect I'm a closet R.E.M.-fan.
