0093. Aretha Franklin
I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
The album starts off with Respect. (I think I'll repeat it just for the feel of it) The album starts off with Respect. - the anthem for every person who's had a no good partner (and a track which she made into her anthem by just singing it with more feeling than even the late great Otis Redding who wrote it could infuse it with).
But Respect isn't the only song on the album, and it isn't the only good song either: the title track, Baby, Baby, Baby and Dr. Feelgood are just a few of the other. This is vintage soul and Aretha is an amazing singer who makes every syllable sound like a victroy against all odds.
There's only one thing: Soul Serenade has a strange setup, her song clashes with the music. It ought to have been more uptempo, harder or she should have sung it in a more mellow voice.
Like the final song, a cover of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come which is sung just as good as it's supposed to be sung.
