0040. Miles Davis
In A Silent Way
Ladies and gentlemen - on the trumpet: Mr. Miles Davis.
In A Silent Way i the first fusion album that Miles Davis recorded (one year later he released the legendary Bitches Brew) and this is the type of jazz that's often sampled on the more intellectual rappers' best tracks: an electronic, but still warm and organic, soundscape. It's built by phrases turning into grooves, sometimes without me even noticing just where the instruments started interlocking their notes. It's the kind of record that makes me want to delve into the genre. The original's setup of two tracks of three stanzas each and no distinct breaks between them makes it easy to get lost in the music (listening via computer makes it even more so). But it's all right, cause if you want to hear a special part of it it's worth it to just play the whole thing again. It's only 38 minutes of your life and you know you could spend them a whole lot worse. After reading up on this release I wonder how the album had sounded if the producer (Teo Macero) hadn't used so much editing. Maybe I should get hold of the sessions-compilation?
