0035. P.J. Harvey
Dry
Dry is the debut album from P.J. Harvey and it's not an easy listen. It's a very heavy rock album - not as in downpitched metal, but as in the mood.
The lyrics are dark and a bit twisted while the tracks sometimes have a repetative streak and are sometimes an almost endless build up, but always top notch (and by the way: while you're listening to Sheela-Na-Gig - check out the Wikipedia entry on the subject). P.J. gets a lot done with just a few instruments: the stripped down rock on Dry seems to fill up the room.
P.J.'s said that put everything in it since she thought it would be her first and last album (remember - this was in the day when record companies pretty much decide that stuff) and it shows: theres's no holds barred and no quarter given. She throws it all in there and the result is an impressive feat of dark raw rock.
